Muscle Cars, Luxury Sedans, and Compact CUVs

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 front three quarters

Every year, confident automakers release dozens of new or significantly revised vehicles for public consumption.

We’re looking forward to the year’s new arrivals as much as you are, and we’ve already begun brainstorming all manner of multi-car matchups, from the obvious to the wild and whacky scenarios we’d probably be wiser to discard.

Below, you’ll find several new muscle cars, luxury sedans, and compact crossovers we should see even more of later this year that should slot naturally into a prospective comparison story. While we’re not saying any of the potential matchups below are officially on the books, it’s fun to think out loud on the interwebs, right? What would your dream new car comparison matchup of all-new or significantly revised cars for 2012 be? Let us know in the comments below.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
The new pride and joy of the Camaro lineup has 580 horsepower provided by a blown 6.2-liter V-8. The ZL1 has spent a lot of development time at the Nürburgring, its aerodynamic efficiency was a major focus, and it goes on sale soon. Should a new American Iron class be put up for sanctioning?

Ford Shelby GT500
The notoriously traction-limited Shelby GT500 gets squeezed up to 650 horsepower and is supposedly capable of breaching the 200-mph barrier. A taller final drive, which would help top speed, was drafted in to help out the back tires. Anything that could be modified for the new model year was taken into consideration.

THE REST OF THE FIELD
Unless Dodge has plans to shove a street-legal version of its 540-590 horsepower 7.0-liter Hemi V-8 crate engine into the Challenger or comes forward with the oft-rumored supercharger option for the SRT8 model, there is no direct competition for the GT500 and ZL1 at the moment.
