Can Audi's Allroad Revive the Wagon?

Audi Allroad

The "cult car" is a curious automotive phenomenon in which inexplicable desirability trumps common sense and convention. For a classic cult car example, consider the Audi Allroad Quattro of yore, an A6-based wagon that enjoyed a devout following and unexpectedly high resale values.

Despite mainstream America's fascination with so-called crossovers and general disinterest in wagons, the folks in Ingolstadt deemed it necessary to bring the Allroad back to the States. This time, Audi's b-segment wagon is based on the A4 and is being dubbed a crossover, but it bears a decidedly wagonish silhouette punctuated by those signature fender flares. The aluminum 2.0-liter engine isn't as thirsty (or ballsy) as its predecessor's V6 and V8, but in this MPG-obsessed era, Audi seems to have struck the right balance for our times-- at least until a more performance-oriented S or RS spinoff appears.

Will the Allroad post big sales numbers when American buyers finally have it within reach? "While we certainly do not expect it to sell more than our Q5 which has been a huge success," Audi's Product & Motorsports Communications Manager Mark Dahncke says, "we believe the Allroad will address the needs of customers that appreciate form and function."
