Does it Make Sense for Automakers to Target Young People?

Millennials have been hard for automakers to pin down. For the first time pretty much ever, they’re a generation that prefers smart phones and Facebook over the personal freedoms driving gives them. It’s taken awhile, but automakers think they’ve finally figured out what the elusive demographic wants in a car, and tech-laden, affordable (because they have no money) rides like the Chevy Code 130R , and Acura ILX have finally started to trickle out.

Today’s Thread of the Day from LJ909 raises an interesting question – does it make sense for automakers to target young people? They’re fickle, have incredibly short attention spans, and pretty much broke, so why bother? Commenters seemed mixed on the issue; 11secJeepSRT8 says they shouldn’t because he doesn’t like the idea of parents spoiling their children, while RoTiCaFo thinks there’s nothing wrong with spending a little money to make money on this demographic.

What do you think? Do you think it makes sense for an automaker to market, and sell a car at a price point that a young driver can afford with or without (significant) help from their parents? Is there even a truly cool, interesting, or relevant car out there currently aimed at the segment? Let us know in the comments below.
